Brunswick Park Film Festival
9–11 September 2022
5 minutes 34 seconds
A silent film made from an extract of Una Marson's request for reference for her time as a producer at the BBC, years after their aiding of her forced deportation to Jamaica. Coupled with a re-edit of footage from war propaganda Una herself appeared in and generated. Commissioned by Black Tower Projects as part of Uddoh’s solo exhibition Sphinx At The Crystal Palace.
Una Marson was a British/Jamaican activist, radio producer, presenter, and poet. While at the BBC she instigated Calling West Indies, the first radio show made from a Caribbean perspective for the purpose of Caribbean audiences. The Empire Service welcomed this broadcast, as it would encourage Caribbean colonial subjects to identify as British subjects, which was crucial if they were to be galvanised for the war effort.
Bio
Rosa-Johan Uddoh is an interdisciplinary artist working towards radical self-love, inspired by black feminist practice and writing. Through performance, writing and multi-media installation, she explores an infatuation with places, objects or celebrities in British popular culture, and the effects of these on self-formation.
Uddoh's solo presentations include: ‘”She is still alive!”’, Destiny’s Atelier (Oslo, 2020), ‘Studies for Impartiality’, Jupiter Woods and ‘Sphinx at the Crystal Palace’, Black Tower Projects (both London, 2019). Group shows include: ‘Learning by Doing’, 68 Institute, Copenhagen, 2019 and ‘Black Blossoms’, The Royal Standard, Liverpool, 2017. Recently she has screened work at East London Cable’s ‘TV Dinners E03’ at Tate Modern, 2019. Uddoh is the 2020 Stuart Hall Library Residency and a lecturer in Performance at Central Saint Martins. She has a solo show upcoming at Focal Point Gallery in January 2021.
